Next Xen is a compilation album that unshackles music from a 200 year old ball and chain. Western music theory says that there are 12 equal notes, and for some reason it's a taboo to break out of this. But what if you want to hear 13? Or even 100 notes, all of different sizes? Such music would be called microtonal, xenharmonic, or just "xen." If you're unfamiliar with the sound of microtonal music, then a good first step is to ask yourself "does this sound out of tune to...

Sean brings xenharmonic bass back home to split-notes. But leave your expectations at the door because this record is a whole different vibe from the artist's previous work. Here, spacious and ambient-influenced sounds fuse with odd-metered grooves and field recordings. On the electronics side, most of the album was produced under the limitation of just 2 synths and a bunch of drum machines. A decidedly experimental trip through electronic dance music land, but from the words of Sean Archibald...

In the realm of microtonality, absolutes are non-existent, and common practice theory offers no light to guide the composer. What little theory there is comes from the science of psychoacoustics, from researchers seeking to generalize and quantify "consonance". This consonance-centric view is a siren for seemingly all the bewildered musicians who find themselves adrift in the uncharted waters of microtonality, and many have heeded its call only to run aground and founder...

Imagine a weird Mad Professor tune, but with all the analog grit and dirt of a vintage King Tubby mix. Add xenharmonic herbs & spices et voila... the recipe for WEIRD SCIENCE by Tony Dubshot. This is Tony Dubshot's second album on Split-Notes. His first, 'Omega Dub,' is still the biggest hit in the label's history so far. Original artwork photograpy by Ton Coops (http://www.toncoops.nl/).

"compulse" is a collection of (mostly) pulse-driven microtonal/xenharmonic tracks produced in 2010-2011. Quirky infectious hooks, fields of distortion, ambient soundscapes, and chamber music textures rub shoulders in an adventure with some surprising turns. Tunings are often mixed, producing a kind of heterophonous pitch space; other times one tuning or scale is explored with focus. The track list is designed for album style listening.

The Gathering EP is a 3-track lil' wonder of a record from Fature, who joined us on the split-notes compilation album last year. The hyper d'n'b vibe which permeates this EP is worlds away from the chilled sound Fature showed us in 'Butterfly Rapport' and still a fair distance from his nu-jazz works. But, while the gent has been multifaceted and eclectic in his tastes, you can still hear that it's him! This is a record where enchanting, mysterious moods collide with frenetic and intense rhythm....

An album of deeply atmospheric and melodic electronic music by Carlo Serafini. There is a little-known secret in music, known as Gamma; a scale which music fans may one day recognize for its exotic melodies (hear tracks: 1 & 5), purity and clarity of harmony (hear tracks: 3, 7 & 8) and its ability to be recognizable when it wants to be (hear track 4 Jingle Gamma Bells). Microtonal musicians will know Gamma as one of the scales discovered by Wendy Carlos, which divides the perfect fifth...

About leaving your hometown behind. Human Astronomy EP comes just as Sevish moves away to the UK midlands. "I always found my little patch of London to be a big source of inspiration. Both the estate I grew up in and the landscape of the inner city are locations which have coloured my music." Human Astronomy features Sevish's last compositions in London; it is a 'good bye, see you again soon' release. It's also a 'next time we meet I'll have so much to show you' release. The EP...

Knowsur is a Japanese artist known for his infectious melodies and sick beats. This mini-album is unique for him, as his first release on Split Notes, to explore the new xenharmonic/microtonal vibes some musicians are using to stand out from the crowd. Have fun listening! "I focused on the 7 tone equal temperament (7-tet) scale as a means for making danceable music. This album is composed of a mode using 7-tet as a diatonic scale and 14-tet as a chromatic scale." SUNERU: Enjoyed...

A hypnotic electroacoustic piece followed by some glitches and drum and bass. Featuring the copyleft-music anthem "Never... In My Life", and the jazzy choppage-fest known as "My Girl is Blue". The first track, "Introduction," is a three part piece of music. The first part is an orchestral and synthesised work in a minimalist style. The second goes into very glitchy and crushed breakbeat with powerful and melodic string section themes. The final section is a...

Crowded Images is the happy return of Sevish after 3 years. This album has a very strong focus on harmony and rhythm. There is a mix of electronic styles, just like the last project Sevish EP. Some tracks are drum'n'bass, some are breaks, some are jazzy, some are like chamber music, and some are just something else uncategorised. As always the idea of "genre" is a burden rather than a benefit, so just expect a lot of change-ups and various influences throughout. It's all part of the...

The original "Sevish" release from 2005 - this EP was my way of saying goodbye to my early music. 7 tracks of electronic music from drum'n'bass to hip hop instrumental to broody breakbeat-rock-electro. As a musician... I'm not interested in music like this anymore, but I like to share it for posterity, plus a lot of people enjoyed this when I brought it out. My personal favorite tracks are "Galaga" and "A Bridge." From looking at the charts on last.fm/music/sevish,...

SOME HARD NOTES TO CRACK Imagine a new musical instrument that can play any sound you like. Surely that would sound quite different from the stuff most musicians pump out routinely. But seriously: how about something REALLY new for a change, because that's what this compilation is all about. Sounds you've never heard before. Call it 'xenharmonic' music (or if that's too hard just call it 'off key'). The music on 'Crack My Pitch Up' has a unique feel to it because it doesn't use the familiar...

These 7 dubs are rhythmically in the zone of reggae, dancehall and triphop. Nothing special, but harmonically they're a bit unusual. Technically speaking, these tunes are made in microtonal tunings like 5-tet, 7-tet and even 9-tet. This means that you can't play along on a regular piano or guitar because the frequencies and the harmonies are in different places, they're actually 'in between' the notes on a piano. What's the point you might ask? Well, it's all about being bored with the stuff...

This album (Golden Hour) touches on dubstep, breakbeat, IDM and hip hop, but has a big d'n'b slant as you'd expect from UK producer Sevish. "Since last year's LP I have changed my techniques and ideas about music... I've been looking beyond traditional Western tonality to find the new moods you can make with alternative tunings - microtones. Meanwhile, my promiscuity with different styles of electronic music and my endless search for beautiful atmospheres and beats both remain!"...
